Gwangjang Market is the nation’s first market, making it the oldest market in South Korea. Established in 1905, you can find lots of things here. Gwangjang is popular for silk, fabric, clothing and food. And the focus in this post is definitely food.
The opening hours are from 8:30am to 11pm for the food section while the other parts of the market closes at about 6pm.

Gwangjang Market is the home of one of Seoul’s must eat food – Fried Mung Bean Pancake!
Bindatteok (빈대떡) – Fried Mung Bean Pancake! The mung bean is mixed with beansprouts, onions and pepper before it goes into the oil to be deep fried. The end product is something like hash brown, with a crispy exterior and soft interior.
Tteokbokki! You will literally see this at almost every food stall at Gwangjang.
Gimbap is Korean’s version of sushi roll. It usually comes with seasoned vegetables instead of meat.
Gimbap makes a good takeaway snack.
I like eating both Tteokbokki and Gimbap together since they are always sold together too. I can then choose to dip it with the mustard or sauce from tteokbokki.
There was also several shops selling porridge in different variations. Mung Bean, Red Bean and Pumpkin are some of the popular ones.
Lots of Kimchi and Banchan here too!
