2020 has been an unprecedented year for the food and beverage scene worldwide. The lockdowns and social-distancing efforts have hastened the closures of many of our favourite eateries, while many more are struggling to survive.

However, Michelin has not slowed down. Not only are they going ahead with the Michelin Star announcement for 2021, they have also released 3 new accolades to reward different facets of the restaurant ecosystem. They are: the MICHELIN Guide Young Chef Award, given to a young starred chef with exceptional talent and great potential; the MICHELIN Guide Service Award given to a restaurant personality, who has a genuine passion for service, in making all customers feel special and enjoy a truly wonderful dining experience; and a brand-new distinction, the MICHELIN green star, given to one or more restaurants that outstandingly embody and embrace sustainability in its day-to-day operations – such as recycling, food waste reduction, or promotion of local and seasonal ingredient sourcing.

Restaurant-wise, many big names have closed, relocated or released new concepts after the lockdown, including Gaa (relocated but only fully re-open in December 2020), Cadence (by Dan Bark, previously of Upstairs Mikeller), Aksorn (by Chef David Thompson) to name a few.

There has also been a flux of prestigious new restaurants opening in 5-star hotels in the 2nd half of 2020 like Côte by Mauro Colagreco and IGNIV by Andreas Caminada. It will be interesting to see which of these new establishments opened in time for Michelin’s cut-off dates to take their place in this year’s edition.

Will there finally be stars in Chiang Mai, and more than just the lonely 1 in Phuket/Phang Nga?

So here’s the much-awaited list of 2021 Michelin-recognized restaurants/eateries. Congratulations to all!
