Rice & Chilli is a new and upscale restaurant located on Level 5 of Mode Sathorn Hotel, just beside Surasak BTS Station. The restaurant has minimalist decor with lots of pure white and hints of red.
Why the name Rice & Chilli?
Rice – Conveying both the purity of the staple in a bowl and the ubiquitous steam that signals its preparation.
Chilli – Injects contrasting elements of red which adds a sense of excitement similar to the way the dramatic purple exterior of the building shouts “hip”.
When dining at Rice & Chilli, you will get a welcome drink which is refreshing and they actually serve different drinks to males and females.
The signature drink here is Tom Yum Gung Tini where vodka is infused with the herbs and spices. This is a very strong and spicy drink, but it doesn’t work well for me. For those who like very strong drinks that is not sweet, this should work for you.
Phad Hoi Malang Poo Kub Prik Pun [290฿++] – Stir Fried New Zealand mussels with chopped garlic, coriander, chilli powder, white peppercorn, shallots and basil.
Tom Kha Gai [290฿++] – Chicken in coconut cream soup with fresh turmeric, galangal and kaffir lime leaves. A popular Thai soup beside Tom Yum.
Chilli Fried Rice. This tastes exactly like the chicken rice we have in Singapore but in a spicy version.
The highlight of this restaurant is Massaman Nong Gae [690฿++] – Massaman Curry with Lamb Shank! The massaman curry is rich, relatively mild in spiciness but so heavenly. Lots of spices and vegetables such as sweet potatoes, onion and tomatoes but the spicy level is just at the right note. The lamb is very soft and tender. Just using the fork, the meat just peels itself off the bone. Don’t forget the cucumber salsa that comes along with this dish. You must also accompany this dish with either the jasmine white rice or the signature chilli fried rice. This is definitely a dish I will return for.
Kanom Thai [210฿++] – A mix of siamese sweets. They are really very sweet because Thai love sweet stuff! Although they look quite similar, the taste and texture is quite different for some of them.
